Victoria 3: Dominion vs Puppet [What’s the Difference?]
Before you make a Diplomatic Play in Victoria 3, it’s important to know about the different subjects in question, such as Dominion and Puppet, as the outcome is heavily dependent on these factors.
When you start a Diplomatic Play, you’ll have to make a certain country into a Dominion or a Puppet (or any other subject), and that will have a huge impact on your power, control, annexing and finances throughout.
It can be confusing to understand the actual significance of both these Subjects, so I’m here to clear it out for you!
Victoria 3: What’s the Difference between Dominion and Puppet?
The game doesn’t provide any additional information to the features of a Dominion or a Puppet.
Although the difference is quite minimal, it’s big enough to cause huge changes in your power and relationship with other countries.
Usually, you’ll target one country and make it a Dominion or a Puppet. To do so, you’ll need Maneuver Points, which varies depending on your rank.
Whether you turn a country into a Dominion or a Puppet, you’ll receive weekly tributes from their income, which can be quite beneficial for yours. A Dominion country will give you 10% of its income, while the latter will allocate 20%.
One of the major differences between these two subjects is that Puppet countries will join the Overlord’s wars and aid them in battles. Dominion countries aren’t obliged to do so.
Furthermore, Dominion countries can start their own Diplomatic Plays and functions mostly as a country of its own.
If you decide to annex a country, let’s say, for one of its resources, you can only do so if you made the country into a Puppet. You can’t annex a Dominion country.
So far, it seems much better to make a country into a Puppet rather than a Dominion, right?
Well, here’s the catch. Making a country into a Puppet will generate much more infamy than it will for the case of Dominion. Your relation with several countries will reduce, hence leading to reduction in allies and financial problems.
Before you actually proceed to make a country into a Dominion or a Puppet, the game displays the possible outcome of this move.
It will let you know the Infamy that will be caused for your action, the relationship that may be tarnished, and the possibility of a war and a list of countries that may or may not turn into your allies. Further information may also be given.
The decision on making a country a Puppet or a Dominion is completely up-to you and your state in the game. You should consider all the points given by the game and strategize accordingly, before proceeding through with the Diplomatic Play.
